| Mathematician, born in Lille, N France. He studied at the Ecole Normale Supérieure, and held chairs in Rennes, Nancy, Chicago, the Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques, and Nice. The leading French mathematician of his generation, and a founder of the Bourbaki group, his Eléments d'analyse (1960–82) in nine volumes carries on the French tradition of the definitive treatise on analysis. |
