| biography:
| Painter and sculptor, born in Vesoul, E France. He adopted the polished academic style of his tutor Paul Delaroche, and began to exhibit in 1847. In 1863 he was appointed professor of painting at the École des Beaux-Arts, where Odile Redon was his pupil. Inspired by visits to Egypt, his most popular works are oriental scenes. He was also a sculptor, and very conservative in his outlook - he was strongly opposed to the Impressionist movement. His works include ‘Duel after a Masked Ball’ (1857, Hermitage). |
