| Preacher and writer, born in Hyères, SE France. Ordained in 1692, he became preacher and writer in the court of Louis XIV, succeeding Bourdaloue with his lectures and funeral orations, including that of Louis which began with ‘Dieu seul est grand, mes frères...’. Petit Carême is a collection of sermons given before Louis XV. Appointed Bishop of Clermont in 1717, he retired to his diocese four years later. He was elected to the Académie Française in 1719. |
