| Agricultural chemist, born in Paris, France. He studied at the School of Mines and at St Etienne, and became professor of chemistry at Lyon. He demonstrated that plants absorb nitrogen from the soil, and showed that carbon is assimilated by plants from the carbon dioxide of the atmosphere. |
