| Peruvian diplomat, and secretary-general of the UN (1982–91), born in Lima, Peru. He studied at Lima University, and embarked on a career in the Peruvian diplomatic service, representing his country at the first UN assembly in 1946. As secretary-general, he played a prominent role in trying to secure a peaceful solution to the Falklands crisis, a ceasefire in the Iran–Iraq War, the release of the Iranian hostages in 1991, and the achievement of independence for Namibia. He became prime minister and foreign minister in the Peruvian transitional cabinet in the aftermath of President Fujimori's resignation in 2000. |
