| Poet, born in Prague, Czech Republic. His first collection was Mêsto v slzáck (1921, City of Tears). Later works include Zhasnête svêtla (1938, Put Out The Lights), and the appearance of the post-war volume Přílba hlíny (1945, A Helmet of Earth) established him as the national poet. He refused all compromise after the Communist takeover in 1948, and Morový sloup (1977, trans The Prague Column) had to be published abroad. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1984. |
