| biography:
| Tennis player, and all-round sportsman, born in Prague, Czech Republic. He was a member of the Czech ice-hockey side which won an Olympic silver medal in 1948. In the same year he was rendered homeless by the Communist takeover of Czechoslovakia, and he competed in tennis first of all as a stateless player, then under the banner of Egypt. He later settled in England, running a sports shop in South Kensington, London. He lost two Wimbledon finals, to Ted Schroeder (1949) and Frank Sedgman (1952), before taking the title in 58 games in 1954 against Ken Rosewall of Australia, a match that produced the most games in a Wimbledon final. |
