| Dutch army officer, born in Mainz, WC Germany. He fought in the Java War, went back in 1831 to take part in the 10-day campaign in Belgium, and returned to the North-East Indies in 1835. He received rapid promotion, and led the third expedition to Bali (1849), then became governor of Sumatra's W coast (1849–58, 1858–62), having been promoted to lieutenant-general commanding the Netherlands East Indies Army. On his return to The Netherlands he had a seat in parliament (1864–6), but was sent back to take charge of the second Aceh expedition (1873–4). Liberal-minded, he deplored the Dutch policy of repression in Aceh carried out after his departure. |
