| biography:
| The most important member of the mediaeval lords of Land van Arkel, between the rivers Lek and Merwede. Jan V, the last Lord of Arkel, supported the Kabeljauwen and opposed William VI of Holland, claiming he was not a vassal of Holland. This resulted in the so-called Arkel War. Van Arkel was supported by the town of Dordrecht and the Bishop of Utrecht, but lost all his possessions to the Count of Holland by the Treaty of Wijk bij Duurstede. He continued his fight against William, who was also Duke of Bavaria and had married the daughter of Philip the Bold of Burgundy. He was captured by Philip of Burgundy, held prisoner by William, and later again defeated. |
