| biography:
| Hungarian statesman and warrior, apparently a Wallach by birth, who was knighted and in 1409 presented by Emperor Sigismund with the Castle of Hunyad in Transylvania. His life was one unbroken crusade against the Turks, whom he defeated in several campaigns, notably in the storming of Belgrade (1456). During the minority of Ladislaus V he acted as Governor of the Kingdom (1446–53). One of his sons, Matthias, became King of Hungary. |
