| biography:
| Writer of popular fiction, born in Haarlem, W Netherlands. At a young age, he ran away from home and went to work as a boilerman on ships. He became popular with his novel about life on tugboats Hollands Glorie (1940, Captain Jan: A Story of Ocean Tugboats). In 1943 he took up residence in Britain and later in the USA. From then he started writing in English and translated his books into Dutch. His play The Fourposter was a popular success and is still performed today, and also as the musical adaptation I Do, I Do. Under his pseudonym he also wrote detective stories. His work is popular both in Britain and the USA. |
