| biography:
| Novelist and sculptor, born in Oegstgeest, W Netherlands. One of the most popular Dutch writers of fiction, he began in 1963 with the collected short stories Serpentina's Petticoat. In this work and other early works, including Kort Amerikaans (1961, Crew Cut) and Gesponnen suiker (1963, Candy Floss), a recurring theme is his opposition against his Calvinist upbringing, the repression of sexuality, and the established values of the older generation. This culminates in Terug naar Oegstgeest (1965, Oegstgeest Revisited) in which a man of 40 revisits his parental home in an attempt to sharpen his own identity and leave his burdening Calvinist upbringing behind. With Turks Fruit (1969, Turkish Delight) he addresses the theme of death and decay set against a tragic love-story. His later work is more contemplative and autobiographical in nature, and in 1984 appeared the novel De onverbiddelijke tijd (The Unrelenting Time). His writing can be described as direct, full of symbolism, emotional and personal. Although he was awarded the Constantijn Huygensprijs and the P C Hooft-prijs, he refused to accept both. |
