| biography:
| Painter, born in Delft, W Netherlands. He married in 1653, and that year was admitted master painter to the Guild of St Luke, which he served as headman. He gained some recognition in his lifetime in Holland, but made little effort to sell; as a result, his art was forgotten until 19th-c researchers re-established his reputation. He painted small detailed domestic interiors, notable for their use of perspective and treatment of the various tones of daylight. Forty of his paintings are known, among them the ‘Allegory of Painting’ (c.1665, Vienna) and ‘Woman Reading a Letter’ (c.1662, Amsterdam). |
