| Dutch economist, born in The Hague, The Netherlands, the brother of Nikolaas Tinbergen. He studied at Leyden. His major contribution was the econometric modelling of cyclical movements in socio-economic growth. He was director of the Central Planning Bureau in The Netherlands (1945–55), then professor of development planning at the Netherlands School of Economics (1955–73), and also worked with developing countries. In 1969 he shared the first Nobel Prize for Economics. There are Tinbergen Institutes for economic research in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. |
