| Naturalist, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He trained in medicine, then turned to the study of insects, devising a classification which laid the foundations of entomology. He first observed red blood corpuscles (1658), and discovered the valves in the lymph vessels and the glands in the Amphibia named after him. |
