| Member of a Flemish patrician family which moved from St Omer, France to Amsterdam in 1586 and played a prominent role in the administration and cultural life of that city from then on to the present day. In addition to his role as burgomaster, he moved in artistic and literary circles and was painted by Rembrandt (1654, Trippenhuis, Amsterdam). He wrote plays and poetry, and was an important art collector. The Six Collection, containing 17th-c works of art, furniture, pottery, glass, etc, is kept at 218 Amstel, Amsterdam. |
