| Writer, born in Velp, E Netherlands. A teacher of French, he writes prose with autobiographical elements. His strict Calvinist upbringing, his native region, and the profession of teacher are all autobiographical constituents which can be traced in his prose. He began with Nachtschade (1975, Nightshade), a collection of stories with romantic and decadent overtones evoking a bizarre and unreal feel. Recurring themes in his work include death, decay, and fate. In addition, he translated A rebours by the French decadent writer J K Huysmans. |
