| Dutch anti-revolutionary politician, born in Maassluis, W Netherlands. He served on Rotterdam Municipal Council (1916–31) and became alderman (1925–7). In 1917 he was a member of the Provincial States of South Holland and in 1918 of the Upper House; he led his party during 1933–56. He was arrested in 1942, freed, and rearrested a year later, and sent to Mauthausen. He was a party leader in the Kuyper tradition, and against any innovation in the party system. His views were strongly voiced in the orrthodox-reformed Trouw. |
