| Writer and drama critic, born in Spijkenisse, SW Netherlands. After having trained as a salesman, he worked in journalism and began writing poetry and stories. His poem De achttien dooden (The Eighteen Deads), illegally published in 1941, became a famous song of resistance to the Germans. He was arrested for helping Jews during the war. |
