| Composer, organist, and harpsichordist, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He studied in Venice, and succeeded his father as organist of the Old Church (Oude Kerk), Amsterdam. He composed mainly church music and organ works, developed the fugue, and founded the distinctive North German school which later included Buxtehude and Bach. |
