| Eminent Dutch historian, born in Rotterdam, W Netherlands. He studied theology, history, and Russian in Leiden, and married the writer Annie Romein-Verschoor. He was editor of the Communist weekly De Tribune (1921–5), but later left the Communist Party while keeping his Marxist leanings. In 1939–52 he was professor of history in Amsterdam (from 1945 of theoretical history, a new discipline created by him) and in 1951–2 lectured at the University of Jogjakarta. A prolific writer, his main work Op het breukvlak van twee eeuwen described as ‘an attempt at integral historiography covering all aspects of a period’, was completed by his wife. He is sometimes criticized for his political views, which were reflected in some of his work. |
