| Painter, born in Maubeuge, N France. In 1503 he entered the painters' guild of St Luke in Antwerp, and accompanied Philip of Burgundy to Italy (1508–9), where he was greatly influenced by the High Renaissance style. He was the first artist to introduce the Italian style to Holland, and his works in that genre include ‘Hercules and Deianeira’ (1517, Birmingham). He was also a well-known portraitist. |
