| biography:
| Poet and novelist, born in Leeuwarden, N Netherlands. He studied medicine in Amsterdam and, working as a ship's surgeon, visited Indonesia, China, Japan, Africa, and South America. He was a grim romanticist, longing for the sea and for the past, searching for a home but never able to settle down. His work expresses the restless, pessimistic nature of the poète maudit. Considered one of the best Dutch poets of the 20th-c, he is also of international importance. |
