| biography:
| Diplomat and statesman, born in Prague, Czech Republic, the son of Tomáš Masaryk. He entered the diplomatic service, and was Czechoslovak ambassador in London (1925–38). In 1941 he was appointed foreign minister of the Czechoslovak government in exile, becoming a popular broadcaster to his home country during the war. He returned with President Beneš to Prague in 1945, remaining in office. In 1948 his body was found beneath the open window of the foreign ministry in Prague, and it was assumed he had killed himself in protest at the Stalinization of his homeland, although there was circumstantial evidence that he may have been murdered. |
