| Dutch politician and prime minister (1959–63), born in 's-Hertogenbosch, S Netherlands. He studied psychology at Utrecht University and became a professor at Tilburg. He formed a triumvirate with L Einthoven and J Linthorst Homan to found the Nederlandse Unie after the German invasion in 1940. He was interned by the Germans in 1942–3. After the war he promoted a social-political movement, the Nederlandse Volksbeweging, but later joined the Katholieke Volkspartij (KVP). In 1945 he was briefly minister of war and in 1946 became Queen's Commissioner for North Brabant after the Nederlandse Unie had been cleared of collaboration with the Germans by an official commission. He later served as prime minister and deputy prime minister, and minister for transport and waterways (1966–7). He was twice a member of the Upper House (1963–6, 1967–71). |
