| biography:
| Dutch naval officer, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, who took his ship into Antwerp during the Belgian Revolution. When arrested by the Belgians he went below to collect his papers, but fired the magazine, blowing up his ship and all aboard. He is honoured as a national hero and was buried in the New Church in Amsterdam. |
