| Poet, born in Brecht, N Belgium. An aristocrat, he became a Protestant but was forced to flee. He travelled to London, through the Rhineland and to Paris, before returning to Antwerp where he converted to Roman Catholicism in 1578. His poetry was the first Renaissance poetry in the Netherlands, under the influence of the works of Petrarch and Pierre Ronsard. |
