| biography:
| Chemist, born in Brussels, Belgium. He studied medicine, mysticism, and chemistry under the influence of Paracelsus, devoting much study to gases, and invented the term gas. He was the first to take the melting-point of ice and the boiling-point of water as standards for temperature. Through his experiments he bridged the gap between alchemy and chemistry. |
