| biography:
| Dutch journalist and politician, born in Drachten, N Netherlands. In 1933 he became burgomaster of Adorp, but resigned in 1941 after the German invasion of The Netherlands. He joined the resistance, and in 1943 co-founded the Dutch underground paper Trouw, becoming editor in chief (1947–71). From 1946 to 1972 he represented the Anti-Revolutionaire Partij (ARP) in the Dutch Lower House, and was party leader from 1956. His views gradually became more progressive and radical. He persuaded the ARP to favour the hand-over of Irian Jaya to Indonesia, rather than intervening militarily. |
