| biography:
| Dutch hydrological engineer, born in De Rijp, W Netherlands. He became famous for his water mills and for his part in draining polders both in The Netherlands (Beemster, Heerhugowaard, Purmer, Schermer, Wormer, and others) and abroad (France, Lorraine, Holstein). He also wanted to drain the Haarlemmermeer, and published a book on how it could be achieved; it was in fact drained 200 years later, in 1852. He also built the clockwork in the towers of the West Church and South Church in Amsterdam. |
