| biography:
| King of Scots (1513–42), the son of James IV. An infant at his father's death, he grew up amid the struggle between the pro-French and pro-English factions in his country. In 1536 he visited France, marrying Magdeleine, the daughter of Francis I (1537), and after her death, Mary of Guise (1538). War with England followed from the French alliance (1542), and after attempting to invade England he was routed at Solway Moss. He retired to Falkland Palace, Fife, where he died soon after the birth of his daughter Mary (later, Mary, Queen of Scots). |
