| biography:
| Bishop and biblical scholar, born in Dublin, Ireland. He studied at Dublin, was ordained in 1601, and became a professor of divinity (1607–21), Bishop of Meath (1620), and Archbishop of Armagh (1625). He settled in England after 1640, and though loyal to the throne was treated with favour by Cromwell. His major work was the Annales veteris et novi testamenti (1650–4, Annals of the Old and New Testament), which gave a long-accepted chronology of Scripture, and fixed the Creation at occurring in 4004 BC. |
