| Soldier of Eurasian origin in the Indian army. Under General Lord Lake (1744–1808), he formed Skinner's Horse, one of the most famous regiments in India. His rank of lieutenant-colonel was not recognized in London until 1827. With the fabulous wealth of 30 years' looting, and several wives, he settled in Delhi and his country seat nearby. He wrote books in flawless Persian on the princes, castes, and tribes of the region, and built a mosque, a temple, and the Church of St James in Delhi. |
