| US soldier and manufacturer, born in Ireland. He arrived in Philadelphia (1772) and served as a captain in the American Revolution. In 1792–6 he was the quartermaster for the US Army (1792–6) and a government contractor (1796–1802). He moved to Pittsburgh where he worked to erect that city's first glassworks, built boats to transport salt and cotton, became involved in the Ligonier iron works, and was engaged in banking. |
