| Arts administrator, born in Melbourne, Victoria, SE Australia. Trained as a schoolteacher, he became director of Gallery A in Toorak, Melbourne (1964–5), director of the Ballarat Gallery (1967–8), acting director and then director of the Australian National Gallery (1971–89), and director of the National Gallery of Victoria (1989–95). He is the author of Renaissance Art (1968), the jointly written Albert Tucker (1982), and A Singular Vision: the Work of Fred Williams (1988). Responsible for much of the outstanding Australian and international collection in the Australian National Gallery, he is known for his promotion of contemporary Australian artists and Aboriginal art. |
