| biography:
| Poet and writer, born in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. He served in World War 2 before entering Vanderbilt University (1949–50). The Stone (1960) was his first published book of poems. He travelled widely and taught at a succession of universities, later becoming poetry consultant to the Library of Congress (1966–8). In addition to his poetic works, he is known for his novel Deliverance (1970), for which he also wrote the film screenplay (1972). |
