| Journalist, born in London, UK. Emigrating to the USA in 1883, he began as a reporter for the Kansas City Times, and in his first big story he tracked down and apprehended a murder suspect in a swamp. As general manager of the Chicago Tribune from 1898, he shaped it into an omnibus newspaper with many features, including an innovative ‘Friend of the People’ column for readers with grievances. |
