| biography:
| King of Scots (1488–1513), the eldest son of James III. He became active in government at his accession, at the age of 15, and gradually exerted his authority over the nobility. In 1503 he married Margaret Tudor, the elder daughter of Henry VII - an alliance which led ultimately to the union of the crowns. However, he adhered to the French alliance when Henry VIII joined the League against France, and was induced to invade England by the French. He was defeated and killed, along with the flower of his nobility, at the Battle of Flodden, Northumberland. |
