| Baseball pitcher, born in Huntersville, North Carolina, USA. During World War 2 he distinguished himself in combat during the Battle of the Bulge (1944). During his 21-year career in baseball (1952–72), mostly as a reliever for the New York Giants and Chicago White Sox, he appeared in more games (1070) than any other pitcher in history. A right-handed knuckleballer, he was elected to baseball's Hall of Fame in 1985. |
