| US soldier, born near Shawneetown, Illinois, USA. A hard-hitting Union cavalry commander, he defeated Nathan Forrest at Franklin, TN (1864), and a detachment of his command captured Jefferson Davis in Georgia in May 1865. He volunteered on the outbreak of the Spanish-American War and saw service in China during the Boxer Rebellion (1900). |
