| Founder member of the publishing firm, Harper & Brothers, born in New York City, USA. He was apprenticed to a printer at 16, and in 1818 with his brother, John (1797–1875), began publishing as J & J Harper. His other brothers, Joseph Wesley (1801–70), and Fletcher (1806–77) joined the firm in 1823 and 1825 respectively. The firm of Harper & Brothers was established in 1833, and went into periodical publishing with several literary and political magazines, including Harper's New Monthly Magazine (1850) and Harper's Bazaar (1867). The business experienced financial difficulties in 1899, and passed out of family ownership a year later. |
