| Prime minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines (1972–4, 1984–2000). He trained and worked as an agronomist (1958–65), then bought and managed an hotel in Bequia, St Vincent. He entered politics through the St Vincent Labour Party, and in the pre-independence period served as minister of trade (1967–72). He was then premier (1972–4), heading the People's Political Party. In 1975 he founded the New Democratic Party and, as its leader, became prime minister. He was re-elected in 1989, 1994, and - despite protests from the opposition - 1998. |
