| Civil engineer, born in Pennsylvania, USA. He was one of the first to build a suspension bridge using masonry towers and wrought iron chains, completing one of 21 m/70 ft span in 1801. In 1810 a similar bridge of 74 m/244 ft span was built at Newburyport on the Merrimack R. |
