| US official and administrator of NASA during its programme to land a man on the Moon, born in Tally Ho, North Carolina, USA. He became head of Bureau of the Budget under President Truman (1946–9), and later his under-secretary of state (1949–52). He was chosen by President Kennedy in 1961 to create in NASA an agency capable of successfully undertaking the Apollo Project, and retired from NASA in 1968, a year before the Apollo 11 landing. |
