| Economist, born in Swanage, Dorset, S England, UK. He worked for the League of Nations in the 1930s, and was a member, then director, of the economic section of the Cabinet Office (1940–6). He then became professor of economics at London School of Economics (1947–57) and of political economy at Cambridge (1957–68). A prolific writer, his principal contributions have been in the area of international trade, including The Theory of International Economic Policy (2 vols, 1951–5). He shared the 1977 Nobel Prize for Economics. |
