| biography:
| Missionary and theologian, born in Northumberland, NE England, UK. He went to Chennai (Madras) as a Church of Scotland missionary (1936) and spent most of the next 38 years in S India, being appointed Bishop of Madurai and Ramnad (1947–59) and Bishop of Madras (1965–74), in the Church of S India. In his retirement he lectured at the Selly Oak Colleges, was appointed moderator of the United Reformed Church (1978–9), and became a parish minister in Birmingham. He wrote on the uniqueness of Christianity, and on Christian responses to secularism in modern Western culture. |
