| Lawyer, born in Lancaster, Massachusetts, USA. Throughout 52 years with Davies & Scudder in New York, he defended the evolution of common law, and in 1871 helped prosecute ‘Boss’ Tweed. A founder, and for nine years president, of the National Municipal League, and a president of the American Bar Association, he was US chief counsel in the Bering Sea controversy (1893). |
