| biography:
| Theatrical producer, born in Mercer, Pennsylvania, USA. He made his stage debut in 1861, and was an established actor in New York by 1870. He toured Australia (1874), returned to settle (1879), and went into theatre management. With two partners he established the theatrical organization popularly known as ‘The Firm’, which was to dominate Australian theatre until 1976. He supported tours by overseas artists, but concentrated on established, long-running successes such as the Savoy operas (for which he held the Australian rights), rather than the contemporary theatre of the day. |
