| biography:
| Engineer and inventor, born in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, USA. He invented a diving bell, and founded a salvage company that made a fortune from sunken river steamboats. In 1861 he built in 100 days eight ironclad Mississippi steamers for the government, followed by other ironclads and mortar-boats. He is best remembered for the steel triple-arched Eads Bridge (1867–74) across the Mississippi at St Louis, with a central span of 158 m/520 ft. |
