| US governor, born in Keokuk Co, Iowa, USA. A schoolteacher and lawyer, he served on the Oklahoma Supreme Court Commission (1911–14). As Democratic governor of Oklahoma (1919–23), he built highways and used the National Guard to end a miner's strike. Indicted for bribery, he avoided conviction by a legal tactic and returned to his law practice. |
